NGĀTI WAEWAE

Ngāi Tahu settled its historical Treaty of Waitangi claims with the Crown in 1997. The legislative aspects of this settlement are outlined in the Ngāi Tahu Claims Settlement Act 1998, which identifies Ngāti Waewae as one of the recognised Papatipu Rūnanga.
Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Waewae was incorporated in 1991 and is the legally recognised representative body for Ngāti Waewae, a member of Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu.
Ngāti Waewae holds mana whenua over Te Tai o Poutini, from Kahurangi Point in the north, to the northern bank of the Hokitika River. We also have a shared interest with Ngāti Mahaki (Te Rūnanga o Makaawhio) in the area between the south bank of the Hokitika River and the north bank of the Pouerua River.
